Environment Matters

Yarrunga is serious about reducing its impact on the local Croydon environment. We’d also like to think that our actions, as well as provision of environmental education, are contributing to help the rest of Maroondah, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and indeed the planet! We have installed solar panels which have greatly reduced our reliance on electricity produced from non-sustainable means. Water tanks have been installed both beneath the building and above ground as a demonstration tool, whilst also providing much needed water for the garden and toilet flushing throughout our building. We have also reduced our water and electricity consumption by introducing small changes recommended during our water and energy audits. We regularly recycle and have introduced recycling bins in the kitchen to encourage recycling by other centre users. We are proud of our achievements to date and strive to operate with the environment in mind.

We regularly run workshops, talks, demonstrations and classes on various environmental topics to help residents and businesses improve their sustainability, reduce their environmental impact, and lower their carbon footprint. We are a leader in environmental education in the local area offering the very popular permaculture design certificate. As well as permaculture, workshops may also focus on topics such as mulching, water use and conservation, vegetable gardens, keeping chickens, energy consumption and much more!
